On February 1, Action Inc. will assume responsibility for Our Place, Cape Ann’s only recovery safe space program.
Our Place is a sober drop-in program for individuals recovering from substance use disorder. The program provides participants with a safe, sober place where they are supported in their recovery. Participants have access to food, counseling, career planning, and activities such as yoga and crafts. Our Place is open one day per week at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Gloucester.
Our Place was founded in 2016 through a partnership between the City of Gloucester Health Department’s Healthy Gloucester Collaborative, Action Inc., Wellspring, The Open Door, and the Cape Ann YMCA.
The City’s Healthy Gloucester Collaborative created and operated the program as a pilot for the first 15 months to test the innovative service delivery model. In its first year, Our Place provided services to 98 members of the Cape Ann community.
“We are thrilled to have found a partner in the community who is committed to sustaining this important program for people in recovery,” said Karin Carroll, the City of Gloucester’s Public Health Director. “The community at large, with the support of the Mayor’s Office, have worked hard to see ‘Our Place’ come to fruition and fill a vital gap in the City’s recovery services.”
Since Our Place was founded, Action Inc. has served as fiscal agent and program partner. When Our Place transitions to Action Inc., all services and program operations will remain the same.
“Action’s most recent needs assessment showed that behavioral health is among the top three needs in our community,” said Action Inc. Executive Director Peggy Hegarty-Steck. “Our Place helps address some of that need and plays a vital role for people in recovery. Readjusting to life after treatment can be challenging, so having a safe, sober place to go is critical.”
