For nearly 50 years combined, board members Linda Murphy and Roger Lesch have witnessed Action Inc. evolve alongside the communities it serves. While programs have grown and community needs have changed, one thing has remained constant: the organization’s commitment to helping people with compassion, dignity, and support.

“I think the most important thing about Action is that it responds to the needs of the community,” says Linda Murphy, who recently concluded 19 years of dedicated service on Action Inc.’s Board of Directors and is now enjoying a well-deserved retirement.

That commitment is reflected not only in the services Action Inc. provides—from fuel assistance and affordable housing to workforce development and adult education—but also in how people are treated.

“There’s kindness,” Linda says. “People are not made to feel sad or less than when they come to Action looking for assistance.”

After 28 years on Action Inc.’s Board of Directors, Roger Lesch now serves as an Emeritus board member. A retired Rockport police officer, he has seen the organization’s responsiveness firsthand, recalling a time he contacted Action on behalf of a couple without heat and watched the problem be resolved within hours.

For Roger, that willingness to act has always set Action Inc. apart. Whether responding to emergencies, supporting students with unexpected needs, expanding affordable housing, or adapting services during the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has consistently found ways to meet people where they are.

“The organization rises to meet the challenges of the time and goes above and beyond,” he says.

After decades of service, both board members agree that while the community has changed, Action Inc.’s purpose has remained constant: providing hope, treating every person with dignity, and ensuring neighbors have somewhere to turn when they need help most.

As Roger puts it, “We’re like a bright star. We’re a beacon.”
