Barbara and her late husband, Frank, spent four decades building a life on Cape Ann.
Over the past few years, Barbara often found herself in a challenging financial position – earning just slightly over income limits to qualify for certain benefits yet still feeling the strain of rising costs, especially utilities. After Frank passed away, the responsibility of maintaining their home fell on her shoulders.
When she applied for Action Inc.’s Home Energy Assistance Program, her mindset was straightforward, “if I qualify, I qualify,” she said. Taking that first step has made a meaningful difference.
Not only was Barbara eligible for the Home Energy Assistance Program, but she was automatically eligible for weatherization services through Action Inc. Following a home energy assessment, she learned her home qualified for insulation installation, new windows, and a new cellar door. These improvements have made her home more energy efficient and more comfortable through New England’s changing seasons.
Alex May, Energy Program Manager, was with Barbara every step of the way, helping her understand the process and the work being done on her home.
“Barbara’s story is exactly why these programs exist. They help people stay safely and comfortably in the homes they’ve built their lives in.” Alex said.
“The people [contractors] who came were so respectful of my home. A group I would certainly have no problem recommending to anyone. It’s a great program,” Barbara says.
That was several years ago. Now, Barbara is giving back to Action Inc. as a donor.
“It’s not much,” she says humbly, “but my small donation might drop into a bigger pot and help someone else.”
Having experienced the impact firsthand, she understands how vital these programs are. Barbara’s journey from client to donor is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when neighbors support one another.
