A Trusted Voice in the Community: Fatima’s Story

Fatima began working at Action Inc. in 2009 in a part-time role, working just one evening a week and Saturday mornings. Often the only staff member in the building during those hours, she was available to anyone who needed support outside of regular business hours.

As a Portuguese and Spanish speaker, she filled a critical gap at Action Inc. Fatima quickly became the welcoming and familiar face for members of the Brazilian and Spanish-speaking communities, helping them navigate essential services like rental assistance and health insurance. 

“Because I speak their language, it is much easier for people to come and ask for help,” she says.

In 2020, Fatima transitioned into the full-time Bi-lingual Community Services Navigator role which allowed her to reach more people in need of assistance. Today, she assists clients with everything from health insurance applications to immigration related services and document support. As more people in the Portuguese and Spanish speaking communities become aware that help is available in their language, demand for services has increased.

Many clients now reach out to Fatima directly, knowing they will be met with understanding, clear communication, and care. For individuals who may feel unsure or hesitant about seeking services, especially due to language concerns, Fatima provides a sense of comfort and trust.

“I always tell them we are here to help, no matter what,” she explains. “What they share with me is confidential and they can feel safe coming here.”

Fatima does more than help people complete applications or access services. She builds relationships. Smiling, she says “people come in and just need someone to listen.”

At the core of it all is her passion for helping others.

“I love what I do,” Fatima says. “It is a pleasure to help people as much as I can.”
