Action helped over 3,351 households on Cape Ann, over 5,400 individuals during fiscal year 2002.

Action Energy Affordability programs helped 1,557 very low-income households with their winter heating bills. Weatherization and conservation programs helped 1,637 households reduce their energy costs through conservation improvements, and heating system and appliance repair and replacement.

Advocacy & Housing staff provided 273 households at risk of homelessness with counseling, landlord-tenant advocacy and/or legal services to help them maintain their tenancy. 347 households received a variety of budget counseling, case management, counseling, information and referral services to help them improve their self sufficiency.

MHFA Home Loans were secured by 21 households (out of 60 applicants) for lead paint removal and home improvement. An additional 8 low-income households obtained financing to purchase their first home.

Project Uplift gave 350 children from 170 families gifts and clothing for the holidays.

Emergency Homeless Shelter gave a bed, shower and hot meals to 226 individuals, and tracked 80 individuals who moved into transitional or permanent housing. Substance abuse and mental health counseling services were provided at the shelter.

Family Law Assistance program, staffed by a volunteer AmeriCorps*VISTA attorney, provided 147 low income individuals with free legal advice. 15 of these individuals received direct representation, and 18 individuals participated in the pro se divorce clinics.

Employment & Training programs trained 284 fishing family members, disabled and unemployed individuals in a variety of technical, basic education and soft-skills programs. 141 of these individuals obtained a job through Action’s job counseling and placement services. 17 adults received their adult diploma, and 9 adults were awarded college scholarships.

Compass Youth Program worked with over 80 poor, at-risk youth (pregnant, homeless, first time offenders, school drop-outs), helping 25 youth get positive work experience, 46 improved their literacy, and 10 high school drop outs got their GED or their high school diploma.

Homecare for the elderly and disabled helped 571 people continue to live independently.

Adult Foster Care placed six disabled individuals in foster care homes, reducing the Medicare cost of placing individuals prematurely into nursing homes.
